The United States Fire Administration of the Federal Emergency Management Agency issued a report entitled "Wanton Violence at Columbine High School--Special Report". It was mentioned in a recent thread which I am no longer able to find, but thanks to whomever brought it to my attention. The link is
www.usfa.fema.gov/downloa...tr-128.pdf
I don't know how long it has been available, though the report is, oddly enough, dated April 1999.
Of Note:
pg15 of 64: "At the time of the incident....the high schools conducted (fire) drills semiannually."
I would like to know when the last fire drill at CHS occured prior to 4-20-99. Reminds me of the rumor that a fire drill was scheduled that very day.
pg15: "There were security cameras in the ADMINISTRATION AREA and the cafeteria." (emphasis mine)
Goody goody, let's see the video!!!! Confirmation comes from an evidence log on page 9945 of the 11K:
"Evidence video tape from north portion of Administration offices"
pg17, concerning the South Wadsworth Diversionary bombs: "A road crew working along the road's shoulder noticed 2 bags and tossed them aside. One bag exploded... A crew member called 911..."
There is something fishy about this tale. A normal person would have noticed how heavy the bags were and would have looked inside!! And there was no interview with the person that found it!
pg19: "At one point, LE personnel were under the impression that as many as eight individuals may have taken over the school."
Nothing new here, but it's good to be reminded.
pg23: School sprinkler activated at 11:52am(FYI, if you didn't know that already).
pg23: One of the cafeteria bombs consisted of a 20-gallon propane tank, 1-gallon metal can of fuel and a 1-gallon container of fuel(non-metal, I assume).
"The propane cylinder was not breached and the container did not vent in the ensuing incipient fire. Only the flammable liquid in the 1 gal metal can ignited."
So what about the hissing sound people heard? What about the strong gas smell that people noticed? What about the fire ball that sent a tongue of flame up the stairwell, visible even from the second floor?
pg24: Good photo of the west side of the school (taken between 1:30pm and 2:30pm by my estimate) showing where Rachel Scott's body was moved to(right by the fire truck). Can anybody confirm that she was wearing blue jeans that day?
That's probably Gardner on the lower left of the picture, in his yellow jacket, crouching behind a white Chevy Blazer. Given the distances involved, I no longer believe he managed to wing a suspect with his .45 from this vantage point.
What is that black object at the feet of the officer at the top of the stairs? --A trench coat, or a discarded black trash bag?
Notice the two students out in the open running to safety behind the fire truck. I question the wisdom of sending people running right past the open west doors of the school. If gunfire erupted at this point they would have been caught in the crossfire. Were the first responders in a hurry to get them out of the kitchen(which is where they probably came from)?
pg26: Good overhead shot of the immediate area aroung CHS.
pg26: Littleton's Training Chief-Training 10-is mistaken for a trench-coater because of soot-covered "turnout gear"(up near the helo landing area on the east side of Clement).
"Officers attempting to secure the area approached Training 10 with their weapons drawn and took him to the ground before realizing who he was."
This happend at 12:08 accoding to LFD radio traffic(see EP 10-2 . An individual named Jay Ruoff is identified as "Training Division Chief, LFD", though I don't think he has an interview in the 11K.
pg31: "As the fire department personnel and the utility workers approached the rear of the building to shut off the gas supply they received reports of shots fired in the gymnasium. Actually, one of the explosive devices had detonated spontaneously, but there was no fire..."
This probably occured about 3:30pm. They mentioned this incident in the 11K but they tried to make it sound like this was a mistaken report. So now they acknowledge that there WAS a noise..... The attempt to blame it on one of the homemade bombs is totally bogus, if you ask me.
pg31: "At 1645 hours, the physician(from Denver Health) entered the school-against orders from the law and fire commands-to pronounce the dead. The physician, on his own initiative, assembled a team of on-scene paramedics to search the school with him. Their personal safety, as well as that of all emergency responders who were still on the scene, was jeopardized by their actions. One of the medics whom the physician directed to assist him went on short-term disability after the incident due to post-traumatic stress."
There was no hint of this in the Final Report or the 11K. Makes you wonder what else they left out.
