10-1-05 University of Oklahoma (aka 'the Brothers Hinrichs of Colorado Springs')
Joel Henry Hinrichs III, 21
You may remember a poorly-reported incident back in October 1, 2005 when a student blew himself up outside the University of Oklahoma football stadium in Norman, Oklahoma in an apparent suicide. The student, Joel Henry Hinrichs III, 21, was an engineering student from Colorado Springs, CO.; he graduated from Wasson High School in Colorado Springs in 2002. Mr. Hinrichs was killed after a large bomb in his backpack exploded while he was sitting on a park bench outside the packed football stadium at Oklahoma University. A witness reportedly claimed Hinrichs attempted to enter the stadium but ran away after security requested to search his backpack. A Norman police bomb expert also stated he did not believe Joel Henry Hinrichs III committed suicide by blowing himself up outside the stadium. I believe he accidentally blew himself up, Sgt. George Mauldin said.
The bomb used in the Hinrichs explosion was classified by the FBI as TAPT(triacetone triperoxide), a popular bomb used by terrorists and commonly referred to as the terrorist bomb of choice. (TAPT was used in the London Subway bombings of 7-7-05) The bomb that killed Hinrichs was allegedly laced with nails and other shrapnel material. It was also reported that a very large quantity of explosives were found in Hinrichs apartment, and that two days previous he had attempted to buy a huge quantity of ammonium nitrate, an ingredient of ANFO (ammonium nitrate fuel oil) bombs, at a local feed store.
Because of these facts, many believe Hinrichs was attempting to perform a terrorist attack against the 84,000 people at the football game, possibly by waiting for numerous fans to exit the stadium during halftime. There were allegations of an Islamic terrorist link through his Muslim roommates.
The authorities quickly concluded however, that this act was merely a suicide by a depressed student.

He was a national merit scholar and debate team member for three years but also battled depression, his father said. During his freshman year at university, "We encouraged him to seek therapy and he did enter counseling, but I didn't get the feeling he really trusted it."

His father went on to say that Hinrichs had been undergoing counseling at Goddard Health Center, which is located on campus.... He left a suicide note on his computer that was found when investigators entered his apartment. The suicide note said, "None of you are worth living with. You can all kiss my ass."

I have had several classes with that guy and he has always been a little different. Always obsessed with guns and ammunition and things of that nature. He did a class project on an armor piercing bullet one time, thought that was kind of weird as well considering that he had all the plans all drawn out perfectly prior to the assignment even being assigned. He never seemed like he was a threat or anything like that though.
"Joel was... fascinated with ammunition and bombs" Thomas Hinrichs told The Gazette in 2005. Hed always been fascinated with artillery."
There are also the usual gaps in the timeline. Hinrichs reportedly dropped out of Oklahoma University(OU) sometime after 2002. From 2003 until he re-enrolled at OU in the spring of 2005, the whereabouts of Joel Hinrichs are still unaccounted for.

--A year later, on Nov. 15, 2006, Thomas Carlisle Hinrichs, the brother of Joel, was arrested at Pikes Peak Community Colleges Rampart Range campus with a Romanian-made assault rifle, bulletproof vest, military helmet, hunting knife, three ammunition magazines, and two boxes of ammunition in the trunk of his car, according to Colorado Springs police. The arrest came after his father, Joel Henry Hinrichs Jr., told police that Thomas had assaulted him and that he feared his son, whose mental health had deteriorated in the past year, would kill him. He believed his son was going to blow, according to an arrest affidavit.
Interestingly, this incident was poorly reported even in the local area, given that just six weeks prior neighboring Park County had suffered the fatal attack at Platte Canyon HS in Bailey. Nor have I heard any speculation or evidence that the college was itself a target that day, which is a logical conclusion to make after finding a trunkful of weapons and ammo at the school.
However, the kid was already the subject of official attention before then. The day after his brothers suicide, FBI agents began investigating Thomas in Colorado Springs for some reason, but closed the case six months later "when they concluded Hinrichs had not made any specific threats." However, an agent continued to monitor (Thomas)Hinrichs behavior on a monthly basis to ensure that he was not a danger to himself or others, according to the affidavit. In July(2006), (Thomas)Hinrichs left a phone message for an FBI agent, expressing his anger with the U.S. government and school system, which he blamed for his brothers suicide, according to the affidavit. He later told police he believed his brother killed himself because of the abuse he endured while in high school, according to court documents. The FBI reopened the case on Hinrichs.
--Hinrichs also considered killing his high school principal and his father, according to the affidavit of arrest. Since high school, his parents required him and his brother to visit mental health professionals, who stripped me of my right to defend myself and interact with other students.

He(Thomas Hinrichs) has been to mental health counselors over the years, including after his brother's death, the father said. "Nothing made a dent." He joined the Army and spent time in Iraq "as an escape from a bad life," the father said.
In a bizarre postscript to this story, a memorial 'stone paver' for Joel Hinrichs was spotted outside the student union at the University of Oklahoma in April of this year(2007). The school's student affairs division arranged to have the stone placed, an OU alumni affairs employee said. Families pay for such memorials, which cost about $150, officials said, but Hinrichs' father told the newspaper the school offered to place the stone and never billed him. ....the father told The Oklahoman the dean "very kindly understood that Joel's act was one of loneliness, not of aggression, and offered to have the stone placed in the memorial courtyard; he also indicated that the wife of the university president might select a tree to be placed on campus, also in Joel III's memory."
--"I was just kind of horrified," Jenny Clemons, who spotted the memeorial, told The Oklahoman. "I don't think he has any business being out here." Clemons, 50, a hospital nurse, said she was in the stadium when the explosion occurred. "... I feel like ... if he'd been successful he would have killed a whole bunch of us at the football game," she said.

Hard to say what was going on here. The official version that Joel Hinrichs committed suicide is frankly unbelievable. There is no indication that either of the brothers was of the 'goth' persuasion, though both incidents were very poorly reported on and not much background info is available. Just another planned rage attack(s) without motive by mentally 'treated' young men.
