12-13-11 Liege, Belgium gun/grenade attack Nordine Amrani, 33 7 dead, scores wounded
Armed with hand grenades, a revolver and an assault rifle, Liege resident Nordine Amrani, 33, opened fire at Saint Lambert Square in the middle of the city. He then either shot himself, was killed by police, or died from a grenade exploding near him. Killed were:
Mehdi Belhadj, 15
Pierre Geronville, 17
Gabriel Leblonk, 17 months
unnamed 75 year old woman
Laurent Kremer, 20, succumbed to his injuries 10 days later
The next morning they discovered the body of Antoniette "Tania" Racano, 49, at a property that the killer rented out. Police claim she was Amrani's first victim.
The suspect had a long record of arrests, though not for violent crimes. Three years before, he had been sentenced for growing marijuana, plus possession of 9,500 spare gun/machine gun parts and 10 fully operable weapons, including rocket launchers. Questions have arisen how this man got ahold of grenades and an assault rifle so soon after being released. It is obvious to me that this man had close connections to the criminal underground and/or the military/police/intelligence operatives.
------------
Early reports make it clear that were at least three gunmen, and that the official version is another lie:

--Shots were fired across the square by gunmen posted on the rooftop of a bakery shop, with further shots heard later from across town.
--There is at least one dead and the attacker. Police are looking for another shooter.
-- Gaspard Grosjean has spoken over the phone to Telegraph TV. He says the first attacker was shot by the police and is now dead.

The daily newspapers Le Soir and La Capitale reported that three assailants threw grenades into a crowd at the bus shelter and opened fire with guns.
Le Soir
Le Soir, Belgium's biggest daily francophone paper, is reporting that the attack was carried out by at least two people- one of whom died in the explosions, one of whom fled. He is understood to have hidden shortly after 1.30pm [local time] in a wing of Liège's new palais de justice. Witnesses have reported that shots were still being heard about an hour after the attack took place.

Interestingly, there were reports that the shooting was connected to a rumored breakout at the courts building, very near the site of the shoooting:

"The mayor of Liege, Willy Demeyer, confirmed that three males tried to escape from the palace of justice, according to the main Flemish paper, De Standaard."

Belgian news site HLN.be reports that three armed men escaped from the city courthouse just before the attack.

Samuel, 24, ...said the attacker was wearing a long raincoat.
(I wonder if that was a long black raincoat?)
