Around 1:30 PM this afternoon, there was a shooting at a medical center at Fort Hood in Texas. Initial reports had 12 dead, 31 wounded, but later one of the hospitalized died, so I think it's now 13 dead, 30 wounded.
Initially, there were reports of eyewitnesses citing more than one gunman and three suspects, all soldiers, were taken into custody. Now, however, the story was changed so that this was the act of one lone gunman, Major Nidal Malik Hasan, an Army psychiatrist specializing in battle stress and trauma counseling. He was shot multiple times at the scene, he was initially reported dead but is now reportedly alive, hospitalized, in stable condition and refusing to talk to authorities. He reportedly used two handguns during the attack before being taken down by civilian police.
The story on him is that after counseling soldiers, he became opposed to the "Global War on Terrorism" and greatly feared deployment overseas. Recently, he was marked for deployment in Iraq (Hood, with 200K residents, is one of the biggest processors of combat troops coming to and from Afghanistan and Iraq) and, we are led to believe, freaked out violently about it. However, a man ID'ed as his cousin said he was not violent and not into guns; he didn't even like going to the firing range.
1) He's Middle Eastern; some say Palestinian parents -- another article, "Jordanian descent". This makes for excellent "Muslims are dangerous" propaganda.
2) He was a highly educated (M. P. H., M. D.) mental health professional specializing in helping people not to go postal, a "disaster fellow" at the Center for the Study of Traumatic Stress ( http://www.centerforthestudyoftraumaticstress.org/members/cstsmember-69_Hasan - NOTE: his photo was on this page only an hour ago; it has been pulled already) There are lots of warning signs before someone does something like this and his peers would have been more attuned to such behavioral anomalies than most.
3) The town of Killeen was also the site of the Luby's crash-and-shoot massacre by George Jo Hennard in 1991, which killed and injured about 40 people total.
4) There have also been a couple of other relatively minor shootings at Fort Hood in past years. But to me, this one has the mark of a "War on Terror" psyop and I think there will be a lot of discussion to come.
