Saari left a number of red flags, mostly gleaned from his postings on the net:

Saari, 22, left two handwritten notes explaining that his motivation for committing the mass slaughter was because "I hate the human race." Saari wrote that "the solution is Walther 22" which was believed to be a reference to the Walther .22 calibre handgun he used to carry out the atrocity.
The suicide notes were found in a dormitory(apparently not in his residence off-campus) at the school where Saari was a second year culinary student. A police source said: "Saari left notes saying he had a hatred for mankind, for the whole of the human race, and that he had been thinking about what he was going to do for years. The notes show he was very troubled and he hated everything."

In Matti Saari's net profile there are also signs of misanthropy. For one, Saari listed "misanthropy and freedom" as his philosophies of life. Wikipedia describes misanthropy as general dislike, distrust, or hatred of the human species.

Police say that the gunman seems to have been driven by rage. The 22 year-old student left a note saying that he had planned his rampage for years adding, "I have always wanted to murder as many people as possible."

In the user profiles that he had created for net sites, Saari described himself as an atheist, who was into heavy music and enjoyed horror films. He also liked to play violent so-called splatter video games.

Recently, he had also become fascinated by guns and shooting practice, (his friends)said. .... Some said they had been concerned about his fascination with guns and school massacres.

The schoolmate describes Saari as a nice boy. He and Saari were in the same class in the upper-level comprehensive school.

Classmates and teachers in Kauhajoki.... described him as an ordinary and sympathetic young man.... . "We were talking about the test the night before," (his schoolmate)Mr Helminen said. Saari's former classmate Marjo Lehtomaeki from Pyhaejaervi said he had seen him last weekend in a bar and they had planned to meet again. "I could never have imagined that he would do something like this. We were talking about how he would come visit us," Mr Lehtomaeki told the Ilta-Sanomat daily.

The shooting immediately brought up memories of Pekka Auvinen's attack at Jokela High School 10 months earlier. Rumors that the two were somehow in contact were confirmed:

It has been revealed that Saari was friends with Pekka-Eric Auvinen, 18, who carried out a remarkably similar shooting at a school in the Finnish town of Jokela last year. They played virtual war games together and plotted their crimes with each other on the internet. The pair played on the same team in an internet war game called Battlefield 2 in which they detonated bombs, shot people and used headsets to communicate. The two school killers also sent typed messages to each other on their computers talking about their plans for a shooting. One of the messages said: "Let's do it together." Auvinen wrote: "If I can't do it I know you can make it."
They even bought their guns at the same weapons store, called Tera-asekeks, a few hundred yards from the school in Jokela where Auvinen killed eight people and himself last November. Saari then waited 10 months before carrying out his rampage in Kauhajoki, 150 miles from Jokela. A friend of Saari's, who did not want to be named, said: "My friend dated him but they broke up after Jokela. The reason was the messages he and Auvinen had been sending to each other." Police fear Finland could now be facing a network of other potential school killers linked by the internet. .... A fellow Battlefield 2 player said: "Auvinen and Saari were on the same team and were very familiar with each other." ... Detectives are searching Saari's computer and telephone records for evidence of communications with Auvinen...


This raises some big problems for the police. Because it was revealed after the Jokela shooting of Nov 7, 2007 that shooter Pekka Auvinen had internet contact with another school shooter plotter--Dylan Cossey, 14--who lived near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and who was arrested a month earlier. At that time the Finnish authorities should have fully investigated all his friends, associates, and internet contacts. Are they telling us they missed internet conversations wherein Saari was also planning a shooting? That's incompetency at best, treason at worst.

And why did it take police a whopping 20 minutes to arrive on the scene? The school was in a town of 14,000 people.

Luckily for the police a mystery witness-'Rauno'-appeared to dispel any doubts about the guilt of the accused or his motives:

The Finnish weekly magazine 7 päivää carries an article today in which a friend of the Kauhajoki school shooting gunman Matti Juhani Saari claims that Saari called him shortly after killing ten people in a classroom. "We greeted each other quite normally, and I asked him in the normal way what he was up to", says the student, who was named in the paper as Rauno. "He announced in a perfectly calm voice that he had shot ten people at the school and he was calling to say goodbye."
Rauno, who studies somewhere other than Kauhajoki, reports that the call came in on Tuesday morning at 11:53. In the newspaper interview, Rauno says that he then asked his friend several times to repeat what he had just said, and that Saari had repeated the admission perfectly calmly. The paper additionally claims that Saari said he had been planning the act for two years, according to Rauno's account. He had further requested during the final call that Rauno arrange for his body to be cremated. "Finally he said something like 'Goodbye, mate'".
Rauno reports that he had known Matti Saari for several years. Already in the early stages of their friendship, Saari had apparently complained that he had been badly teased and bullied while at school, in particular in secondary school. The bullying had continued into lukio, or upper secondary education leading to university or polytechnic admission. Rauno says that around two years ago he began to notice that his friend had changed in somewhat scary fashion.
Saari began to show off shooting video-clips he had found on the YouTube site, and had told him of his admiration for the American school shootings. Eighteen months ago Rauno had received a message overnight, in which Saari said he was "going to do something big and shoot a lot of people in a school somewhere." "I called him back in the morning and expressed my astonishment at the message, but he just grunted and said it was mostly only kidding around." Rauno says he became concerned when Saari had told him he intended to take up shooting.


Well all I can say it is sure convenient for the official version of events for this guy to show up. No doubt about it now. Saari definitely did it. Or so says the mystery witness. He even provides a motive! This reminds me of the Myyrmanni shopping center bomber Petri Gerdt, 19 who killed 7 people back on 10-11-02. In that case a another mystery witness, "Hessu," came forward to sweep away any doubts about the guilt of the accused.
