"Instead of a Columbine, it's a Crandon

10-7-07 Tyler Peterson, 20, Crandon, WI 7 dead, 1 wounded
A young sheriff's deputy in the small town of Crandon, Wisconson(pop. 2000, about 225 miles north of Milwaukee) goes to a late night house party in an attempt to make up with his ex-girlfriend. The two argue and she ask him to leave. The other party-goers get involved and allegedly call him a "worthless pig." Enraged, he walks back to his truck, pulls out an AR-15 assualt rifle, and commences shooting all who remained in the house, killing six and seriously wounding the sole survivor.
The Forrest County sheriff's duputy(and part time Crandon police officer) was 20yr old Tyler Stevenson. His victims were:
Jordanne Murray(the ex-girlfriend), 18, Aaron Smith, 20, Bradley Schultz, 20, Lianna Thomas, 18, Katrina McCorkle, 18 and Lindsey Stahl, 14. Charlie Neitzel, 21, was severely wounded, paralyzing him for life and costing him an arm.
The six people killed in the rampage were either students or recent graduates of Crandon High School(CHS), which Dep Peterson had also attended.
As there was somewhat of a believable motive, and that none of them were into the goth look, I normally would not pay this one any mind. However, due to the young age of both the perp and the victims, and some very curious events post-massacre, this one definitely belongs on the list.
As he left the apartment, Peterson fired numerous shots at a squad car driven by a fellow Crandon officer, Greg Carter, 21, who was responding to a call of shots fired. Carter was injured by flying glass as at least one bullet hit his windshield. Unfortunately, this first responder put his car into reverse and fled the area.
[Comment: And too bad for anybody else in the gunman's way]
This allowed the perp to get away, and he would not be caught for another 11 hours(from about 2:45am when the shooting occured to about 2pm when the cop was shot).

Peterson showed up at (family friend)Matt Kegley's home a few miles north of Crandon at about 7:30 a.m. Sunday(4 and 1/2 hours after rampage) and told his wife and their son - Peterson's friend since childhood - what happened.
[He eventually turned over his AR-15 and two other long guns he had with him.]
The family quietly called 911 . ....
Peterson..... left the house, promising to return.
[He allegedly went to his mother's house-or met her at some location on the road.]
About an hour later Peterson came back. The Kegleys again called 911 . ....
After about another hour or so, Kegley said he left his house to find out where the police were . ....
Kegley owns a construction and roofing company based on his property. Several of his workers were there and also called 911 "many, many" times , he said.
After a while, Peterson climbed in the back of his pick-up truck and went to sleep . Workers again called 911. Still no law enforcement approached.
Kegley said his workers estimated Peterson slept for about 45 minutes and then woke up. By then dozens and dozens of officers, deputies and other law enforcement officials surrounded about 200 acres around the site and infiltrated the woods.
Somewhere around 2 p.m. Peterson walked off toward the woods. He got about 50 yards from the house and was shot, Kegley's workers who witnessed the happenings, told him.
Perhaps to avoid answering embarassing questions about the LE's failure to contain the shooter, a cover-up rapidly forms amongst the law enforcement:

Officials deny request for 911 tapes
Forest County officials today again denied release of 911 calls recorded during the aftermath of Sunday's fatal shooting of six people in Crandon. .....
Such recordings are public records under Wisconsin law and routinely provided in most cases to news media outlets.
Witnesses' accounts of when they called 911 to report the shooter, Tyler Peterson, was at a home in nearby Argonne, and when he was finally confronted by law enforcement have raised questions about how long it took authorities to respond.
A clerk at the Forest County jail also denied a reporter's request to view the facility's arrest log, another public record routinely reviewed by the news media. Wisconsin case law has clearly established that arrest logs must always be shown to anyone who requests to see them.
[Comment: Arrest record? Someone was arrested?]
The coroner's report said Peterson received a rifle round through his left bicep, and three close-in wounds to his head, two under the chin and one into the temple, from his own .40 cal handgun. In other words, they concluded he had shot himself in the head three times. Though few believe such a scenario.
